spring training

It feels like spring is in full force. I gave up on skiing and have settled right back into biking. I was feeling guilty for not using my ski pass enough, but now the excitement for warm weather has overtaken the guilt.

We were down in Southern Idaho last week, and the weather was sunny and in the 60s. I brought my bike and rode it almost every day. I managed to ride around 80 miles in the last 2 weeks. I’m currently training for the first gravel race of the year here in Sandpoint. We’re only about 4 weeks away. Last year I did the one humper, as they call it (56 miles and 2,300ish elevation), but this year I’m planning on doing the two humper: 78 miles and 4,300ish elevation! I just got some new biking shoes, and I’m officially riding clipless, which for you non-bikers means my shoes clip into my pedals (weird name, I know). I’ve been avoidant for so long because I was prioritizing versatility. As someone who goes on bike tours, I liked having street-style riding shoes so walking around was still comfortable. But we’re getting serious, baby. I want to do longer rides this year, and though going fast has never been the goal, it might be fun to try to get a little faster? Either way, I got mountain bike-style shoes so I can still walk around without waddling when I’m off the bike. My first ride with them had me wondering why I hadn’t made the switch sooner. I even rode on some singletrack. Did you know you can ride a drop bar gravel bike on pretty much anything? You should try it. It sure makes those blues feel a little more exciting.

The training plan for the next 4 weeks looks something like this:

  • Yoga 3 days a week (one Yin, one Vinyasa, and one Hot 26 class)
  • Lifting 2–3 days a week
  • Biking goal: 4/6–4/12 50ish miles | 4/13–4/19 65ish miles | 4/20–4/26 75ish miles | 4/27–4/3 race week!

Will I stick to this? Who knows. I will try to report with weekly recaps.
