bring blogs back

There’s an itch that has been pestering me the last couple of years. It nudges and tugs at a place from within me that’s hard to describe. It tells me to stop consuming and share. I remember the early days of instagram. I was a senior in high school when I made my account, 685 weeks ago. Instagram famously tells you how old photos/comments are in weeks, although I think that should have been updated around the time rectangle photos came into play. Back then, 300 followers felt like a lot, and scrolling was something you did to see what your friends had eaten that day. Now, my feed is a continuous nervous system disruptor with advertisements and suggested content far outweighing the profiles of people I actually know. Instagram is partially to blame for that. The algorithm shoves endless profiles of influencers telling us what to buy someone they don’t know for Christmas down our throats. But more and more, people aren’t posting if they don’t have a following. It’s a highlight reel at best, and a brain blasting commercial at worst. So I’m bringing it back to my high school days, where my friends and I shared our thoughts on blogger.com (we really did this). Blogging feels more intentional- something that for me, social media has been lacking for a while. This idea of creating just to create, without attachment to what the end product will be has been following me around. Accepting the fact that you have to make a lot of bad art, to get good art, and imperfect action, outperforms doing nothing. Although a blog isn’t much more than a place for thoughts to become permanent, it can act as a launching pad for conversation, and connection. So here’s to taking action, to a new year, and a new blog.
